Why I Chose University of South Carolina by Ben Cottingham.
I spent a long time deciding where I wanted to go to school before I chose South Carolina. I had so many different factors to consider that the decision was incredibly overwhelming. I was looking for a strong business program, a relatively large student body, and to be honest, a power five athletics conference, but other than that I was open to exploring all options. Now however, with year one in the books I know that I made the best choice for me and I would not change a thing.
The opportunities that I would have in South Carolina’s business school become obvious from day one. A flyer handed to me in the dining hall introduced me to the Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity and my pursuit of brotherhood in that organization is where I found my closest friends at school. I had the chance to get to know other undergrad students in my same classes, as well as meet several alumni brothers who have gone on to amazing careers in finance, investment banking and entrepreneurship. In the Moore School of Business, I could take practical business classes from remarkably accomplished professors right out of the gate as a first semester freshman, which was both exciting and intimidating. The success that I saw through others, as well as the opportunities I saw for myself reassured me that I had found the business school I was looking for.
Anyone who has ever been to an SEC football game can tell you that it is an experience like nothing else. The seven home football games of my freshman year we exactly as electric and exhilarating as I could have possibly imagined. I will always maintain that when sandstorm is playing, there is no better place in the world that the student section of Williams Brice Stadium. Moreover, the epic Final Four and National Championship runs by our men’s and women’s basketball teams are stories that I will tell forever. The chaos that ensued after knocking Duke out of the NCAA tournament is indescribable.
I am stunned that my first year of college is already over. I feel like I only moved into my dorm a week ago. However, after experiencing everything that year one had in store for me I am excited for the next three and I cannot wait to go back. How does the next four months seem so long when nine months felt so short?
