Babson College: The Right Choice for Me by James Cheng
I am glad that I can say today that Babson College was undoubtedly the right choice for me. The people are amazing and inviting. The professors are interesting being that many are very accomplished. I have learned a lot in my first year both in and out of class. Babson gives students plenty of time to explore their passions which for many at the #1 entrepreneurship college, is starting their own business. I have been fortunate enough to be starting up my own venture- Vowel Inc. I have found that the small size of Babson actually allows me to stumble across more opportunities than I would find at a larger university. For example, my company Vowel Inc. recently participated in e-Fest, the largest undergraduates-only business plan competition where I won $1,250 and got to meet some of the most forward thinking individuals, including Daymond John. I only heard about the competition because one of my professors pulled up the website during class because he was a member of the competition’s board. Babson strives to foster entrepreneurial thought and action, and does so by giving students the resources that they need to prosper. I am a member of the Butler Venture Accelerator to help jumpstart my company and I was also the CEO of Gozone, a company spawned from Babson’s flagship FME program where all first-years start, run, and close their own businesses. In general, I have found Babson to be a fun, inclusive environment. I have made lots of great friends in a very diverse environment. I am concentrating in entrepreneurship and finance because I want to make something of myself and have the autonomy to exercise my passion for continuous improvement. My one piece of solid advice for high schoolers is to load up on APs because they mean so much when you reach college. Having a few APs under my belt means that I am not stuck to the normal curriculum at Babson. Next semester I am taking an architecture class at nearby Wellesley College to further explore my passions and in the future I plan to study abroad as a part of Babson’s BRIC program (Babson Russia India China) and spend a semester at Babson’s San Fransisco campus making connections. Or I may decide to graduate a year early. The point is, college is what you make of it, so do whatever is in your power to make it the best years of your life.
